General dentistry care in Mississauga can halt the progression of dental problems

For many, many years, we have heard the phrase “prevention is the best medicine.” This is true in just about every sense. When it comes to oral health, it is possible to keep teeth and gums in tip-top condition with regular dental care. When caught early, developing dental problems can be most easily treated with conservative general dentistry care with your Mississauga dentist. Without early treatment, however, minor dental problems tend to progress into something more serious.

The progression of common dental problems

  • Tooth decay is one of the most prevalent dental problems, stemming from the erosion of enamel. When a cavity is just forming, it cannot be detected by the naked eye. In many cases, this early problem will not even be felt, except for possibly a bit of sensitivity. Over time, erosion makes a hole, or cavity, in tooth structure. As the hole expands inward, it progresses at a faster rate due to the softness of dentin material. If not treated, the cavity will eventually reach the innermost part of the tooth where the pulp becomes infected and intense pain occurs.
  • Gum disease is also difficult to detect when it first begins, which is why routine dental care is so vital to oral health. When caught early, gum disease can be addressed with deep cleaning treatment, which removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the gum line and below the gums as well. If not treated, gum disease will weaken supportive tissues, which will pull away from teeth, allowing bacteria to continually move towards teeth roots and bone tissue. Advanced gum disease can ultimately cost a person his or her teeth.
  • Tooth loss may occur for several reasons. If not gum disease, tooth loss may occur due to extensive damage or a direct injury. Missing teeth are more serious than most people think, affecting far more than the look of the smile. When natural tooth structure is missing, the un-stimulated bone tissue beneath the gap gradually breaks down. The more teeth that are missing, the more pronounced the effects of bone resorption.

We understand that many people harbor anxiety about dental care. In addition to offering gentle, compassionate care, we also encourage our patients to realize that, with regular visits, there is a far lower chance that complex treatments will be needed.
