Mississauga dentist explains gum cleaning or deep teeth cleaning for gum disease

Tooth decay is not the only threat to an individual’s oral health. Nearly half of adults over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease can worsen and may lead to tooth loss. Located in Mississauga, Dr. Rina Kotecha of Dentistry on 10 offers treatments such as gum cleaning or deep teeth cleaning to help slow the progression of periodontal disease.

Deep teeth cleaning

When plaque and tartar are not cleaned off in a timely, proper fashion, they create build-up along the gum lines and roots of the teeth. This leads to red, swollen gums. A deep cleaning alleviates the swelling, inflammation, and bleeding associated with the early stages of gum disease. Not only does this ease a patient’s symptoms, but it can also slow the progression of the disease to keep it from becoming more severe.

A deep cleaning differs slightly from a regular dental cleaning. During a deep cleaning, scaling and root planing are done. Scaling involves scraping off plaque above and below the gumline. Root planing removes tartar and bacteria from the pockets of the gums. This deep cleaning may be performed with ultrasonic and hand instruments. It is a more thorough way of cleaning the teeth and getting rid of plaque and bacteria.

For a mild case of gum disease, a deep teeth cleaning may be done in a single appointment. More severe cases may require more than one session. Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, antibiotics, mouthwash, or medications may be recommended to clear up any lingering bacteria.

Benefits of gum cleaning

Gum disease starts out small but can escalate quickly without proper treatment. The goal of any treatment is to preserve the health of your teeth, gums, and oral cavity. As a treatment for gum disease, deep cleanings include the following benefits:

  • Remove plaque and bacteria from the gums
  • Slow the progression of periodontal disease
  • Ease the discomfort and symptoms of gum disease
  • Are non-surgical and non-invasive
