Invisalign braces creates beautifully straight smiles in the Port Credit area

When we think of orthodontic problems, what we may envision is a smile marred by overcrowded, crooked teeth. Misalignment, in most cases, does have a negative effect on the appearance of the smile. This problem also makes it difficult to avoid conditions such as cavities and gum disease. An additional side effect of misalignment is the bite.

Oral structure and a “good bite”

In the oral structure, we find not only teeth but also bone, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and joints. These various features all work together to achieve healthy chewing function, ensuring that teeth meet as they should to properly break down foods. This is a “good bite.” In some, the degree of this type of function is very low. It is possible that the bite could need correcting even in cases that the teeth look quite straight.

Why we need a “good bite”

When teeth do not fit together properly for chewing, the efficiency with which foods are broken down for digestion will be low. The result of inefficient chewing is a taxed digestive system, which may lead to chronic stomach upset.

The body inherently knows that teeth need to fit together for chewing. As such, the jaw will work hard to accomplish this goal. What can happen after a time of straining to achieve a good bite is that the muscles and ligaments that facilitate jaw movements stretch in some places and tighten in others. The joints at the back of the jaw are placed under excessive amounts of stress and become dysfunctional, resulting in chronic facial or head pain.

Depending on the severity of a bad bite, it is also possible that the smile and the facial appearance may be diminished. For some, a bad bite equates to a bad facial profile.

Achieving a “good bite” with Invisalign

Braces have long been a treatment offered to patients in the Port Credit area for bite alignment. Adults and even many teens, however, may avoid consulting with their dentist about teeth straightening due to perceived discomfort and unattractive metal braces. At Dentistry on 10, patients may find that they can achieve a healthier, more attractive smile without the common hassles of orthodontics. Using Invisalign, Dr. Kotecha helps her patients improve function, oral health, speech, and more.
