Mississauga dentist explains how you are never too old to correct crooked teeth with adult braces

While Dentistry on 10 generally recommends all children’s teeth be evaluated for orthodontic treatment by age 7, straightening appliances and treatments are certainly not limited to kids.

In fact, the Canadian Dental Association reports more adults are having orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance and health of their smiles.

Wearing orthodontic treatments today has never been for adults. There is no fear over the “metal brace face” that may be associated with straightening methods from your childhood. Modern technologies such as Invisalign are made from a clear plastic, so no one can see your dental appliance.

Invisalign also fits seamlessly into busy lifestyles. You can remove the straightening alignment trays for meals and cleaning, and even during special occasions as long as you adhere to the 20 to 22 hours of wear time each day.

Invisalign is a very effective way to close gaps, correct crowding, and treat problems with how the upper and lower teeth fit together. Treatment failures are typically related to patients not wearing Invisalign as recommended by their friendly Mississauga dentist, Dr. Rina Kotecha.

Contrary to popular belief, Invisalign is not tremendously more expensive than conventional treatments such as braces. In fact, costs are comparable. However, if you compare the investment of time in these methods Invisalign is a better option.

Since the trays are removable, you only need to visit Dr. Kotecha every 4 to 6 weeks so she can assess how well treatment is progressing. With traditional braces you would need to see her every few weeks, as these fixed appliances must be adjusted and tightened so treatment can progress. On average, it takes about 1 year to straighten with Invisalign whereas conventional braces usually require a 1 to 2 years of wear time.

Perhaps your teeth did grow in at an angle. Maybe your crooked teeth look an awful lot like other family members’ teeth. In this case, you have lived with crooked teeth your whole life and there is no time like the present to transform your smile and possibly the quality of your life with newfound confidence. You may find it easier to clean between teeth post-treatment. There will be fewer hassles associated with chewing certain foods, and perhaps you’ll notice conditions such as headaches are subsiding after bite problems are addressed.

In other cases, crooked teeth may be a newer, albeit unwanted, facial feature. Perhaps you have noticed teeth shifting over time. This can be a normal part of the aging process. Conditions such as gum disease may cause teeth to move and eventually become loose. The pressure from nighttime teeth grinding or bruxism wears down teeth and can push them out of proper alignment.

Before you wear any appliances, including Invisalign trays, Dr. Kotecha will want to treat conditions that may have contributed to teeth shifting in the first place. Orthodontia can aggravate already destructive problems.
