Mississauga residents seek treatment for gum disease

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common condition that can lead to serious problems, such as tooth loss, if left untreated. Gum disease starts when plaque builds up on the teeth. When left unattended, the plaque hardens, damages the teeth and gums, and leads to pockets between the teeth and gums where more bacteria can build up.

There are different stages of periodontal disease. It begins as gingivitis. This stage is characterized by swollen, red gums that may bleed when brushing and flossing. If untreated, gingivitis further progresses into periodontitis. During this phase, the gums and bones become damaged. In later more developed stages of the disease, the teeth may become loose or fall out.

Although hard to detect in the early stages due to the lack of pain or other noticeable symptoms, if caught early, gum disease can be treated successfully and without the need for surgery. Regular dental checks with Dr. Kotecha and her associates help to ensure a healthy mouth and gums. During dental exams, the dentist can detect early signs of gum disease making the issues easier to treat and the prognosis better for the patient.

Signs or symptoms of gum disease may include:

  • Swollen, inflamed, or red gums

  • Loose teeth or teeth that have fallen out
  • Changes in previous dental work
  • Changes in bite

Treatment options are available for gum disease. When caught early, surgery is not necessary. Treatment is mild. This may include a professional cleaning by the dentist. The dentist may also perform scaling or root planing which remove plaque and other agents from the teeth.
