What is a cavity?

A dental cavity is simply a hole in a tooth. There is a common misconception that sugar causes cavities. In truth, oral bacteria thrive on sugars and starches left behind by beverages and foods. A cavity begins with the breakdown of the protective enamel from acids produced by these bacteria, with damage eventually extending into deeper layers of the tooth.

To repair tooth decay, the dentist must remove areas of damage to the point of healthy tooth structure. Then the opening is sealed. The shape of the tooth is recreated with a strong material, for restored appearance and function.

The cost of a cavity repair depends on:

  • Size of the cavity
  • Location of the tooth in the mouth
  • Number of tooth surfaces repaired
  • Amount of numbing required
  • Type of filling material or other restoration used
  • Whether the cavity has caused need for additional treatment (such as root canal therapy or involvement of an adjacent tooth)

On average, a filling can cost over a hundred dollars and require time off for a visit to the dentist. If you wait too long, it can also result in significant discomfort or even the need for an extraction! Wouldn’t you rather avoid cavities? Dr. Rina Kotecha and her team at Dentistry on 10 are eager to help!

Tooth decay is a prevalent problem

According to the Canadian Health Association, nearly 24 percent of children in this country have at least one decayed tooth, and that number increases to about 59 percent by adolescence. That makes dental caries the most common childhood chronic disease. If your child has asthma, he or she is about four times more likely to have cavities in teen years than a non-asthmatic.

Cavities are not just a childhood problem. Nine of every ten adults have had some degree of tooth decay.

You do not have to be one of them, and that is great news.

Prevention is our primary goal

Dr. Rina Kotecha takes your smile seriously. She takes time to understand your personal risk factors and designs an individualized strategy to help you stay free of tooth decay. It may include:

  • Nutritional guidance. The doctor advises on eating habits and supplements that foster a healthy mouth and body.
  • Advice on smoking cessation and responsible alcohol consumption. These habits (especially in combination) can play a major role in development of dental caries in adults.
  • Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. Everyone should brush at least twice a day, and if you have genetically inherited soft tooth enamel, the doctor may suggest more frequent brushing.
  • Flossing before bedtime. This is also a must for all patients, and the hygiene team at Dentistry on 10 will show you proper technique. Do you have dental restorations, misalignment, or orthodontic appliances? You may need to use a floss threader, water flosser, or interdental brushes.
  • Regular professional cleanings and examinations. The hygienist uses instruments and techniques designed to remove plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing might miss. Checkups allow Dr. Rina Kotecha to detect and treat potential problems early. Usually twice a year is recommended, but if you are managing gum disease or another oral condition, you may need cleanings more often.
  • Topical fluoride. This quick painless treatment supplements tooth enamel, helping it fight acid attack. Adults and children benefit from fluoride.
  • Sealants. A clear varnish is painted onto the chewing surfaces of molars. It flows into microscopic pits and fissures, preventing harmful bacteria from penetrating. Dental sealants protect against cavities up to 80 percent, and benefit continues for several years.

Our Happy Patients Say

Procedure – Gum Disease Testimonial

Hi I’m at dentistry on 10 and I had gum disease and they treated it. Laser treatment, laser gum treatment and I just want to say it was awesome. I have the rota dent brush and I use that daily and it keeps my mouth fresh and clean and hopefully it’ll prevent any future issues. The staff here is amazing, always so polite Doctor Rena rocks. I’ve seen her for years totally rocks. She is very kind gentle, especially if you don’t like the dentist. She’s the one to go to because she’s there for you and she’s sensitive to your needs and she rocks. Just want to say I had a root canal with her many, many, years ago and it she’s so gentle. I don’t know what the big issue is with the root canals, so that’s my feelings. All good. Highly recommend.
