Mississauga straightening options appeal to adult patients who do not want to wear metal braces

A lot of patients desire a movie star smile. Usually if you request a smile like a certain celebrity, what you are really asking for is a whiter smile with straighter, more uniform teeth. Especially if you are an adult, you may seek an unobtrusive, convenient way to alter the shade, position, and even shape of your teeth. These types of corrections can enhance the look of your smile by achieving symmetry. Your features will appear more balanced.

How to: Veneers

One of the most convenient and natural-looking ways to achieve a brighter, more uniform smile is with porcelain veneers. These thin strips of porcelain are quite the multi-taskers, as they may be used to do everything from covering chips, gaps, and stubborn stains, to contouring unevenly shaped teeth.

If Dr. Rina Kotecha finds veneers are right for you, a very small amount of tooth enamel will be removed. This step is necessary, because the veneer will be applied to the front of the tooth. If the enamel remained untouched, the veneer would look too prominent. By removing a tiny amount of enamel there will be enough room to securely bond the veneer and achieve results you will smile about.

As with other types of restorations such as dental crowns, after the tooth is prepared Dr. Kotecha will take an impression of the treatment area and surrounding teeth. This impression will be used to make the final veneer. A temporary veneer will be placed while you wait for the permanent one to be made in lab. During a return visit, Dr. Kotecha will remove the interim veneer, check the fit of the permanent veneer and, if it looks and feels good, it will be securely cemented in place.

Alternative treatments

While veneers are known to look and feel like natural teeth, there is no single option that works for every patient. Dental bonding is considered a reversible procedure, as no alteration may be required to apply the tooth-like, composite resin material that will effectively be your new tooth structure.

Dental bonding might be a better fit for your budget, but other treatments can be more cost-effective overall. Consider the value of treatment. For those with more serious problems in the way the upper and lower teeth come together, Dr. Kotecha may recommend orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign. These aligner trays are clear, so no one has to know you are straightening. They may be removed for eating and cleaning for up to four hours a day.

Even traditional orthodontic appliances have evolved with tooth-coloured brackets and wires, so there is no fear that your adult braces will look like obvious metal mouth. Turn to your Mississauga dental provider, Dentistry on 10, to explore if orthodontic treatment or other methods to achieve a straighter smile are right for you.
